Single review: “Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni” by Phantasm (FES cv. Yui Sakakibara)

PHANTASM is a fictional band from the visual novel (and later adapted to an anime) ChäoS;HEAd. Yui Sakakibara is the CV of Ayase Kishimoto (FES). Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni is their seventh single.

Release date: 22nd of June, 2011

Track List:
1. Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni
2. EUPHORIA ~Tsugunai no Requiem~
3. Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni (off vocal)
4. EUPHORIA ~Tsugunai no Requiem~ (off vocal)

1. Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni
Oooh, that eerie introduction sounds like something out of a horror movie… Oh, this is the ending theme for the Steins;Gate game for PSP, so… Anyway, I didn’t expect powerful drums and electric guitars to come in so suddenly… That’s so cool! An intense opening leads to a quieter arrangement and Yui starts to sing with this unsettling kind of tone, which really adds to the creepy atmosphere of the song. But then the drums and guitars come back from the pre-chorus and onwards, and her vocals come in quite forcefully and with a sense of urgency. She is even more stronger as she sings the chorus with great vocal control. I’m actually really impressed with this song!

2. EUPHORIA ~Tsugunai no Requiem~
Nothing really happens within the first 20-ish seconds of the song, but then the entrance of emotional piano and strings indicates that this is a ballad! EUPHORIA ~Tsuginai no Requiem~ is the ending theme for the Steins;Gate Hiyoku Renri no Darling game for the Xbox 360. Yui sings quite softly throughout the song, and the arrangement pretty much stays the same until the bridge, where we hear an electric guitar at first, and then drums enter the song, which makes it all sound dramatic. I’d have to admit that the song didn’t do much for me in the first listen (perhaps because I was still in the mindset of the A-side), but come second listen, and I started to like it a bit more. I think that this track is not for everyone, and while I do like it, I’m leaning more towards Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni. On a side note, this song reminds me of EGOIST’s Euterpe

Firstly, thank you to 123 of Tsukiyo no Hikari for recommending me PHANTASM and this single! Preghiera no Tsukiyo ni is an awesome, intense goth metal track, and EUPHORIA ~Tsuginai no Requiem~ is a cold and dark ballad. Both songs showcase Yui’s vocal ability quite well, and in my opinion, she has great emotional conveyance! While I’m happy with both songs, I prefer the A-side, as it’s just so powerful. The thing with the B-side, while it’s good, is that it needed a little something more… Oh, I would have liked a third song though. :p

  1. If you liked the first song, you should also check out her newer single called Hagane no Yoroi Matou, Sanbyuaku no Daishisai (Robotics;Notes game ED). I reviewed it back in April, and both songs are absolute masterpieces.
